Our nature trails traverse the estate allowing you to fully explore the many habitats and wildlife the estate has to offer.  The finest way to appreciate nature’s beauty is on foot, however if you are an avid mountainbiker why not give the Mottram Mountainbike Trail a go. Our trails can be used by both riders and walkers alike.

 

Picnic

A picnic in the bush has to be one of the finest ways to enjoy a meal! There are a variety of spots to settle down for a bite, with all providing spectacular views of the estate. Some of these areas include the Hlambamasoka Waterfall, along the Gorge Trail or enjoy a picnic under the trees by the conference centre.  So bring along a picnic basket and make the most your day trip.

 

Birding

The estate is 2200 hectares in size which comprises of rich diverse landscape that is home to a wide array of bird life. The different habitats include undulating grassland plains, bushland thicket, thornveld, Scarp Forest and wetland which offer exciting birdwatching for both novice and expert alike. The Estate has numerous natural and man-made wetlands and dams that provide excellent opportunities to spot birds such as African Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher and African Jacana. Along the cliff faces and rocky outcrops one is likely to see Mocking Cliff Chat, Southern Bald Ibis, Swifts and Striped Pipits. The Nhlambamasoka River feeds into the Umgeni River and provides a riverine habitat where African Finfoot can be seen on the flat water sections. Some of the special sightings on Fountainhill Estate include Blue Crane, Crowned Crane and the Palm Nut Vulture. So pack those binoculars and your bird book and let’s go birding!
