The estate is 2200 hectares in size which comprises of rich diverse landscape that is home to a wide array of bird life. The different habitats include undulating grassland plains, bushland thicket, thornveld, Scarp Forest and wetland which offer exciting birdwatching for both novice and expert alike. The Estate has numerous natural and man-made wetlands and dams that provide excellent opportunities to spot birds such as African Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher and African Jacana. Along the cliff faces and rocky outcrops one is likely to see Mocking Cliff Chat, Southern Bald Ibis, Swifts and Striped Pipits. The Nhlambamasoka River feeds into the Umgeni River and provides a riverine habitat where African Finfoot can be seen on the flat water sections.
Some of the special sightings on Fountainhill Estate include Blue Crane, Crowned Crane and the Palm Nut Vulture.
